A clean driveway before the holidays

A surface cleaner attachment cleaning a concrete driveway

The driveway is the first thing anybody sees and the last thing most people think about. If you are having family over, it is also the single cheapest thing you can do to make the front of the house look after itself.

Why concrete goes grey and green

Concrete is porous. Everything that lands on it soaks in a little — pollen in spring, leaf tannin in autumn, tyre rubber and oil all year. Add our humidity and the edges start growing algae where the grass holds moisture against the slab. That is why a driveway usually goes green at the borders first and grey through the middle.

Why a wand alone will not do it

You can clean concrete with a wand, and you can also see exactly where somebody did. Waving a pressure wand leaves stripes and arcs where the passes overlapped, and on a big slab it never looks even.

I use a surface cleaner — the round attachment you will have seen in my photos. It holds a fixed distance off the concrete and spins two jets under a hood, so the whole width gets identical treatment. It comes out uniform, and it does the job in a fraction of the time.

What comes out and what does not

Algae, general grime, pollen, leaf staining, most tyre marks — all fine. Oil that has been soaking into concrete for years may lighten a great deal but leave a shadow. Rust from a fertiliser spill usually needs a separate treatment.

I will tell you honestly which of those you have got before I start, rather than promise you a miracle and hope you do not notice.

Book it before the rush

November and December get busy for obvious reasons. If you want the concrete done before people arrive, earlier is easier for both of us. Call or text (770) 789-1606.
