Every year I get the same run of calls in November, and every year they would have been cheaper in September. Once the leaves are down and packed into a gutter, and then it rains on them, you are not cleaning a gutter any more — you are digging one out.
What actually goes wrong
A blocked gutter does not just overflow. Water backs up under the shingle edge, runs down behind the fascia, and finds the soffit. By the time you can see a stain inside, the wood has usually been wet for months. That is a carpentry bill, not a cleaning bill.
The other half of it is the outside. Gutters streak with what people call tiger striping — those vertical dark runs down the face. That is not dirt washing off the roof, it is a mix of oxidised aluminium and road film, and it does not come off with a hose. It needs a proper detergent and a hand.
When to do it around here
Forsyth County has enough hardwood that most homes want the gutters cleared after the drop, not during it. If your house sits under oaks, that usually means late November into December. If you are mostly under pine, you have a second problem — pine straw packs tighter than leaves and holds water like a sponge, so it is worth a look twice a year.
What I do
I clear the gutters out by hand, flush the downspouts through, bag the debris and take it with me, and then wash the outside of the gutter so it matches the rest of the house. If a downspout will not clear, I will tell you rather than leave it and hope.
